My goal as a designer is to manipulate the visual elements to evoke the voice and personality of products and services. I am a visual designer. I create identities, I create branding, I design adverts, brochures, websites, and user interfaces.

I CREATE COOL
I craft experiences that connect people with products and services putting people at the centre of my design thinking and empathising with the user. I create design elements and objects of all kinds, for clients for audiences and for myself.
The first section is my NuoDB work, latest and greatest.
I’ve always found putting an edited collection of my work together difficult. Do I just showcase my best projects or do I show off a wide variety of work? In this collection I’m showing some of my latest NuoDB work and then a selection of historical work that I think reflects my approach.
My ambition after I left school was to work in the area of graphic design. When I left college I was hired by Rédacteurs, an editorial and design consultancy that specialises in publishing for high-tech firms, this gave me my first taste of the IT world.
I was then hired by IBM to work with a software development team to design and develop user interfaces. I was the first ever graphic designer hired directly by IBM Ireland.
I was lured away from IBM when IONA Technologies head-hunted me to set up a design and usability function within their software development group. I worked there for seven years running a group that eventually consisted of eight designers. As well as designing and developing the company brand, we designed the various product interfaces, packaging and marketing material.
While IONA was in its death throes I got an opportunity to partner with a friend who was setting up a design consultancy business in Dublin. We married my design skills with his expertise in management cosultancy. I took over this business two years later.
My next move came in 2015 when I joined NuoDB to develop their brand and design a user experience for the product.
I’m a designer that creates experiences
I design websites, application interfaces, and GUI elements such as screen layouts, widgets, icons, animations and a host of visual entities for desktop, tablet and mobile applications. I design and develop branding, advertising and marketing material for digital and print media of all kinds.
I design beautiful web and mobile experiences
Enhancing the user experience by improving the usability, the accessibility, and the visual pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and the product is core to my design approach.
Creating wireframes, user testing, developing user personas, and designing scenarios and storyboards for customers are all part of my process for developing beautiful web and mobile experiences.
I have a wealth of experience developing wireframes and design compositions for software applications.
MY DESIGN METHOD
I follow the Stanford d.school’s ‘Design Thinking’ methodology of design
Empathy for the user is at the heart of my approach to design. The process for me involves generating lots of rough ideas at the early stage and developing rough mock-ups and prototypes for testing. I like to address the problem that needs to be solved by challenging the constraints of the brief.
I'm a fan of the graphic design of Neville Brody and the experimental approach of David Carson and the classic typographic style of Roger Excoffon.
Cooper design strategy
At IONA Technologies I worked with Cooper Interactive, the design and strategy firm, to develop the design for several of the IONA product suites. I’ve incorporated the Cooper methods into my approach by user testing directly against developed composite character personas.
At IBM I followed the methodology of human-computer interaction outlined by Jakob Nielson, with a heuristic evaluation approach to designing user interfaces as part of the design process.

"Hobbies are for people that don't like what they're doing."
– Stefan Sagmeister
That's mostly the case for me. In my spare time I design things and I really love doing it, sad but true. I do like cooking and I grow herbs in my garden, some vegetables too, and like everybody else that mentions hobbies I do a fair bit of reading. I did once make furniture from pallet wood.
I don't play golf.
